Here's one for the policy and legal nerds out there. We talk to Australian expert, Amy Sinclair, to help us unpack the ins and outs of modern slavery legislation. Amy is the Regional Representative for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific at the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, a leading international NGO tracking the human rights policies and performance of companies worldwide. She has been at the forefront of recent corporate human rights developments in Australia, including the creation of the Modern Slavery Act 2018.
In the first episode, we explored the problem of modern slavery in our international supply chains - people working in conditions of modern slavery whose work may just have contributed to products we buy here in New Zealand. But what if the problem is not just 'out there', overseas somewhere? In this episode, we talk further with Dr Christina Stringer from the University of Auckland, who has undertaken extensive research into issues of exploitation and modern slavery within the shores of Aotearoa New Zealand. For more on her research with the Human Trafficking Research Coalition, and then also with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, see here.(NB: I incorrectly refer to MB as the Ministry of Business and Innovation in the podcast.)
What is modern slavery? Why it is so prevalent? And how is it showing up in our global chains? We talk to:Dr Christina Stringer from the University of Auckland Business School, and the Center for Research on Modern SlaveryMichelia Miles from Trade Aid
